Module Synopsis:

 

This module provides a general overview of the key listening and speaking skills required for effective communication and which will assist students prepare for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic paper, which has been chosen as the exit language test for university graduates in Hong Kong. The module will assist students to develop their individual English oral and aural skills and their knowledge of and the skills required to undertake the IELTS listening and speaking tests. Students will be introduced to the nature of the test and the test formats and will explore a range of test-taking strategies. In addition, students will be introduced to self-directed practice materials, strategies for, making use of practice textbooks and a range of references on IELTS, as well as other related learning materials and electronic tools.

To help students acquire the relevant knowledge, language proficiency and strategies required in the IELTS Listening and Speaking tests.

Teaching Methods:

 

Aside from teacher instruction, students are expected to participate actively in interactive activities involving individual self access, pair and/or group work. A variety of authentic texts / materials will be used to increase relevance and consequently students¡¦ interest in learning. A minimum of 6 hours self-access study will be spent in the ELC.
